DEADLINE: Please note that the priority deadline for submission is February 1st, however all applications must be delivered to the KPMG office in the Cayman Islands by April 30th

Overview: 

KPMG in the Cayman Islands will provide financial assistance of up to US$30,000 per year, up to a maximum of four and half years. This is intended to be used toward standard tuition, student fees, books and supplies, and room and board as needed.

Qualifications

To apply, applicants:

  1. Must be Caymanian or hold Caymanian status.
  2. Should be at least 17 years of age and must have the necessary background to achieve success at a competitive university.
  3. Should have received notice of acceptance by an approved and fully accredited educational institution overseas.
  4. Must possess a High School Diploma and have at least 5 IGCSE/GCSE/CXC passes with a grade B, 2, or higher or equivalent passes in home country dictated by their governing Board of Education or Ministry and/or hold an Associate Degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher from a regionally accredited university or community college.
  5. Should provide their SAT results for math and critical reading scores of 900 minimal or ACT score of 19.

Application Requirements

  1.   Recent full face photograph
  2. ‰  Birth certificate
  3. ‰  Certificate of Caymanian status
  4. ‰  Final cumulative high school and/or university transcript(s)
  5. ‰  Copy of acceptance letter into accredited accounting program
  6. ‰  Total cost of university attendance (tuition, room and board fees, insurance, etc.)
  7. ‰  CV/Resume
  8. ‰  Essay on, “Why I chose to pursue higher education in the accounting field.”
  9. ‰  Two letters of recommendation (i.e. academic or work experience) 

Selection process

Applications are considered on an annual basis.

Applicants will be required to undergo an aptitude test administered by KPMG in the Cayman Islands.

Applicants will be required to attend an interview with the Recruitment Manager and a Partner at KPMG. Interviews are usually conducted between April and May.

On this session of  the Caribbean Students to Atlantic Canada Podcast we talk with Kenya Dames, a recent graduate of Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She pursued a Public Relations degree with a minor in Marketing.  

Kenya, who is from Grand Bahama, Bahamas, graduated from Grand Bahama Catholic High School  and headed to university after graduating. Kenya delves into the details of her degree, apartment set up and job advice . She also talks about how her co-op work experience through MSVU led to a full-time position with the Canadian government after graduation.

The Scotiabank Studentships are awarded on a renewable basis to five entering full-time undergraduate students in recognition of exceptionality.  The studentships are available to both domestic and international students and are each valued at $8,750 annually for four years.

The Presidential Scholarship and the Presidential International Baccalaureate Scholarship are valued at $9000 per year and are tenable over four years for a total of $36,000 (CAD).

Noteworthy

Decisions : If you are awarded one of these scholarships we will inform you of the amount and other considerations.

Renewal: In your first year a grade point average of 3.67 in a minimum of 24 credit hours between September and April is required for renewal of the scholarship.

In your second and third year a grade point average of 3.67 in 30 credit hours is required between May and April for renewal.

Value of Awards

Three scholarships to be awarded each year:

  • One award:  $30,000 per year (CAD) – to a maximum of $120,000 CAD over 4 years.
  • Two awards: $17,000 per year (CAD) – to a maximum of $68,000 CAD over 4 years

Who's Eligible

  • Must be a national of Antigua and Barbuda.
  • Students must meet Saint Mary’s University admission criteria by program
  • Any person in their final year of secondary school. (Fifth form)
  • Any person attending a tertiary institution. (Antigua State College/ABIIT etc.)

  • Should be 16-25 years at the time of application.

  • Can be identified as deserving of recognition in the area of humanitarian efforts, specifically with respect to acts of bravery and kindness.

  • Any person who has graduated from a secondary or tertiary institution within the past eight years.

Each student must complete this application form and submit the following documents:

  • A passport sized photo.

  • Certified copy of valid passport.

  • Certified copy of birth certificate.

  • Certified copy of all academic certificates. (CSEC, CAPE, IB Diploma etc.)

  • Recent academic transcripts.

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from three (3) separate sources, not including relatives, to verify their involvement in humanitarian efforts, or exceptional acts of bravery or kindness. Letters can be submitted by teachers, friends, religious leaders or employers.

5 Places to Source Caribbean Foods in Atlantic Canada

Leaving home to advance your education is an exciting experience. You’re in a new place, making new friends and learning new things. 

But, whether you’re on a meal plan or not, there will come a point where you want a taste of your dad’s macaroni pie or grammy’s chicken souse. If your supply of home grown snacks has  depleted, you may have to venture out into the snow to restock. 

Where do you go? Where do you start? Don’t worry, we have made a list of all the places in Atlantic Canada  that we frequent when it’s time to cook or buy some good Caribbean food. 

1. Mom and Pop Grocery Stores

These single-location stores are not very big, but can carry niche items that can be purchased in a small quantities. This is perfect for the college budget. Places like Victory Meat Mart in Fredericton, New Brunswick come to mind . The store  has been known to carry scotch bonnet peppers, Halal foods, salt fish and oxtail (on occasion).  

2. Supermarket Chains

When schooling in Atlantic Canada, you will most likely become familiar with two chains: Atlantic Superstore and Sobeys. Sprinkled throughout  New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, their international food isles are known to stock  Matouk’s and Grace Products. If you are known to ‘chef-it-up’, this can be a great place to source plantains, yams and canned ackee.

3. Bulkbarn

Need a king’s ransom in yellow cornmeal because you’re in charge of making the pastelles for the Caribbean association this year ? Well bulk barn may be your place.  Bulk Barn is great because it allows you to purchase as much or as little of an item as you need.

Note: We have yet to find a source for fig leaves ! 

4. Farmers Market or Cultural Market

If you have ever been to a farmers market , you know that there are always tasty international treats to sample.  If you cross your fingers, you may find a fellow islander selling some authentic Jamaican or Trinidadian food.

5. Restaurants

Well if you’re not set up for cooking or perusing the farmers market, Atlantic Canada has its share of Caribbean restaurants that will hopefully quench your craving. From ‘A Taste of Jamaica’ located in Newfoundland to ‘Caribbean Bliss’ in Nova Scotia, a restaurant outing with friends is a great treat after you  finish an exam.
